WHAT CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO ICAN?

The one-day workshop "WHAT WE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO ICAN?" will be held on December 16, 2013 at the University of Nizhny Novgorod. It is dedicated to prospective participation of Russian research institutions and universities in the upcoming European megaproject on the development of a "dream laser" capable to deliver light with Petawatt peak and Megawatt average power. Such a source will undoubtedly create a revolution in societal application of high peak power lasers, harnessing a full range of technologies from laser based radiation medicine to nuclear waste processing. It will also open new avenues in fundamental science by supplying researchers with unique instrumentation like gamma-gamma colliders and Higgs factories.

Based on the idea of Coherent Amplification Network with thousands of combined ultrashort pulse fiber lasers, ICAN has successfully moved through the preliminary stage of conceptual design and is ready for a further accent to prototyping, construction, and exploitation. A number of foreign universities, major research labs and R&D companies including University of Southhampton, Ecole Politechnique, Jena University, CERN, FermiLab, Thales, etc have expressed their desire to participate in the next stage of ICAN. We invite our Russian colleagues to discuss potentialities of their contribution to this challenging international project.

The Workshop will be highlighted by presentation of the head of the ICAN program Prof. Gerard Mourou (IZEST, Ecole Polytechnique and the University of Nizhny Novgorod).
